Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was spotted watching a historic first meeting between Serbia and Montenegro on Thursday night, reportedly in order to have a closer look at centre-back Nikola Milenkovic.
United’s manager has long been keen to add to his defence, and having not been granted the money to sign Toby Alderweireld, Jerome Boateng or Harry Maguire in the summer, Mourinho is still set on a major signing.
Dire performances and results this season have only strengthened his desire to buy somebody better than Phil Jones or Victor Lindelof.
Milenkovic is reportedly the latest name on his target list, and Mourinho was in Podgorica this week to see the Serb keep a clean sheet away to rivals Montenegro.
He only turns 21 years old today, but Milenkovic’s roots are leading to questions as to whether he can be as great a success – if he were to move to United – as Nemanja Vidic.
That might seem a long way off given he only moved to Fiorentina last year and has played just 24 times in Serie A, but his recent rise suggests nothing should be discounted.
He is still very much learning his trade, but has become a regular at both club and international level. However, for Fiorentina, despite being 6’4″ tall, he is now the first-choice right-back, having played every minute in Serie A so far this season.
The Metro claims United have now put a €60m (£53m) offer on the table to Fiorentina ahead of the January transfer window.
United have also spoken to the 21-year-old’s agent, who has indicated that the defender would be willing to move to Old Trafford.
