The Arsenal manager let his side off the leash from the very start of the game and although they conceded first, Alexandre Lacazette’s goal was the least they deserved – by the end the Emirates was on its feet and roaring them on to get the winner.
They very nearly did so, against one of the league’s unbeaten teams who for long periods of this game found themselves under pressure and denied the ball.
Jurgen Klopp’s side were unfortunate that Sadio Mane’s first half goal was wrongly ruled offside by the linesman Simon Long, one of those details of the evening that made a big difference.
By the end, a draw felt right in what was for the most part, a high-quality game with two teams permitted by their managers to attack in the best traditions.
Liverpool are unbeaten in 11 Premier League games and return to the top of the table by a point before Chelsea and Manchester City play their corresponding fixtures.
Arsenal side continued their record of being significantly better in the second half but left it late for Alexandre Lacazette to level the score after James Milner gave Liverpool a deserved lead.
Liverpool player ratings against Arsenal – Premier League
GK: Alisson – 7
Missed a cross early on but looked much more solid as the game went on, saving well from Lacazette and Lucas Torreira.
RB: Trent Alexander-Arnold – 5
Exposed by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s pace and didn’t look as secure defensively as usual.
CB: Joe Gomez – 7
Really developed this season and looks comfortable on the big stage, blocking well from Aubameyang.
Suffered a nasty clash of heads with Milner but soldiered on bravely.
CB: Virgil van Dijk –7
Towering in the air at the back and then went close three times at the other end, missing a good chance before hitting the post with a header then forcing a great stop from Leno.
LB: Andrew Robertson – 6
Was kept busy defensively but still offered a ready outlet with some driving runs.
Worked Leno hard with a fierce first-time shot and reliable as always.
CM: Fabinho – 5
Struggled to get up to speed and lived dangerously with some rash challenges before eventually finding his way into the referee’s notebook.
CM: Georginio Wijnaldum – 6
Enjoying a stellar season but found himself bypassed in the centre of the pitch as the match flowed from end to end.
CM: James Milner – 7
Was finding things frustrating as Arsenal enjoyed much of the ball for the opening hour, but was then in the right place to slam home after a mistake from Leno.
RAM: Mohamed Salah – 7
Looked Liverpool’s brightest player for much of the match, and Sead Kolasinac will surely see the Egyptian in his nightmares from now on.
One delicious cross almost found Mane as the Reds looked to double their tally.
LAM: Sadio Mane – 7
Had a legitimate goal disallowed for offside and couldn’t quite stretch enough to reach Salah’s cross in the second half.
ST: Roberto Firmino – 6
Chances were few and far between for the Brazilian as he plugged away tirelessly up front.
Went close with a header from a corner when he should have really hit the target.
SUB: Xherdan Shaqiri (on for Firmino, 79 mins) – 6
