Jurgen Klopp previously said he was hopeful of having James Milner (hamstring/muscle) available to him for Thursday’s trip to the Etihad, while Alberto Moreno (back) is also in contention.

Klopp talked about the defensive drawbacks of a 4-2-3-1 system after the win over Arsenal, so Jordan Henderson could join Georginio Wijnaldum and Fabinho in a central midfield three for possibly Liverpool’s biggest test of the season to date.

Milner – if fit – and Naby Keita are other alternatives in the engine room, of course, while Milner is also an option in the full-back positions.

The form of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will surely see those three players continue up front, so Xherdan Shaqiri looks likely to drop to the bench.

Joel Matip (collarbone) and Joe Gomez (lower leg fracture) remain out, while Dominic Solanke (muscle) is also expected to remain sidelined.
