Manchester United are plotting a raid on Champions League rivals Sevilla for goalkeeper Sergio Rico, reports in Spain suggest.

Old Trafford chiefs face another summer of attempting to swat away interest from Real Madrid for David De Gea but they are lining up potential replacements in case their No 1 opts to move to the Bernabeu.

And United have begun exploring a possible deal for Rico in the wake of their goalless draw at Sevilla on Wednesday, according to Spanish publication El Gol Digital.

Rico had little to do in the Champions League last-16 clash as United rarely troubled his goal.

The 24-year-old has impressed between the sticks for Sevilla since breaking into the first team in 2014.

He has one cap for Spain but is behind De Gea in the national team’s pecking order.

Rico is under contract with Sevilla until 2021 but his deal contains a £35million (€40m) release clause.

And El Gol Digital claim that United are willing to submit an offer to secure his signature.

Rico has also been linked with Real Madrid but De Gea is a long-term target for the Spanish giants.

De Gea nearly moved to the Bernabeu in the summer of 2015 but a faulty fax machine on deadline day ended any hope of a switch.

The 26-year-old put pen to paper on a four-year contract extension less than a fortnight after the switch collapsed but has remained on their radar ever since.

He has just 18 months left on that deal so the speculation around his future is beginning to crank up.
