Arsenal and Tottenham are interested in signing Manchester United out-of-favor defender Phil Jones, according to talkSPORT.
The English defender is out of contract at the end of the season and United are already looking to take their 12-month option on the centre-back to ensure he doesn’t leave for free according to reports.
He is one of a number of players who will be leaving the club at the end of the season if they do not take their 12-month extension option, and he has featured just twice this season.
Arsenal are now looking to sign him on a free transfer if United don’t extend his contract, something that the Red Devils will certainly be looking to avoid.
The 26-year old arrived at Old Trafford from Blackburn in 2011 and has made 171 appearances for the club over 7 years.
Sir Alex Ferguson upon signing the then 19-year-old once claimed he had the potential to become one of his greatest signings
His time at Old Trafford has however been riddled with injuries which has seen his development stagnate if not regress.
He is still admired by current boss Jose Mourinho, and a new contract could give the club time to consider their options on the player.
The news of Arsenal’s interest is quite strange, as the player doesn’t seem to be better than the current crop of defenders at the Emirates and his injury history is something the Gunners will certainly be dreading given their history with injuries.
But then again we live in an unpredictable world and we could just see Jones in an Arsenal shirt next season.
