Several reports claimed Manchester United were planning a late deal for Harry Maguire and Toby Alderweireld to Manchester United players by the end of the day, with the Red Devils reportedly willing to spend £75m on the Leicester star and a further £50m on the Tottenham man.

It was understood United were favourite in signing Tottenham’s Alderweireld over Leicester defender Harry Maguire, but reports suggested Jose Mourinho was trying to announce a deal for both players

The Red Devils were scrambling around trying to find a new centre-half ahead of Thursday’s transfer deadline, with several options having been considered before the summer window shuts down.

The Foxes had offered Maguire an improved contract worth £75,000-a-week – a rise of £30,000-a-week from the five-year contract he signed after joining from Hull just last summer – to reflect his new status after the World Cup.

While Tottenham were believed to be holding on to a fee of around £75million and were keen on doing business or risk losing the Belgium international for £25m next summer.
