Chelsea have been linked with a surprise move to sign Alessio Romagnoli and Mattia Caldara from AC Milan when the January transfer window opens, according to Calciomercato.

The 59-year-old former banker Maurizio Sarri is said to have prioritised signing a central defender in the New Year and is closely monitoring the Milan pair.

The report further claims that Chelsea will attempt to bring the duo when the January transfer window opens as a bid to strengthen their defense despite Sarri’s good start in the Premier League having won all four games already this season.

Centre-half Romagnoli, 23, who has seven international caps for Italy, has captained Milan in their opening two Serie A fixtures so far this season.

Romagnoli only recently renewed his San Siro contract, though, while Caldara joined from Juventus during the summer window, meaning that the Blues may have their work cut out.

Romagnoli is contracted at the San Siro until June 2022, and is valued at £36m, whilst Caldara’s deal does not expire until June 2023, and is worth around £22.5m.
