According to journalist Gabriele Marcotti, Mauzirio should have axed Marcos Alonso from his Chelsea team a long time ago.

The former Napoli man has been urged to field Andreas Christensen in a back three setup instead of Alonso whose performance has been questionable this season.

A hat-trick from Sergio Aguero, a brace from Raheem Sterling and Ilkay Gundogan’s strike handed champions Manchester City a 6-0 win over Sarri’s side.

“What I would find worrying is here is that the issue here wasn’t the old, stupid trope that all the ex-pros pull out about: ‘why isn’t Kante playing in front of the back four?’ The issue here was really bad individual defending and individual tactical defending,” he told The Game podcast.

“On the first goal where [Eden] Hazard and Alonso fall asleep and they don’t see the run, on the third goal where [Ross] Barkley’s not even heading it back to the goalkeeper, he’s just heading it back towards his own goal ‘cos Kepa [Arrizabalaga] was actually far away and he doesn’t see little Aguero lurking.

“On the fourth goal where I would expect Kepa to keep it out and obviously the second goal’s a worldie.

“So in some ways they completely fell apart there defensively and that’s not something that we’ve seen before. We’ve seen issues where maybe the press didn’t work and so on, he went into press them high early on but then when you’re 4-0 down that kind of all goes out the window.

“And if I was Sarri that’s the concern. There’s no good going out and saying: ‘well Alonso can’t play in a four.’ For me personally, I would have had Alonso out of there a long time ago defensively simply for that reason.

“I would have had Christensen in there a lot sooner and actually had an actual back three rotation.

“He needs to sort this out because once those holes leak defensively as well, then everything goes out the window. He’s got enough issues with his press further up the pitch, but this was really, really problematic.”
