French youngster Alexis Claude-Maurice has agreed personal terms to join Arsenal, according to the Metro.
Arsenal have a meagre transfer budget and this has restricted them to signing young players that are yet to hit their peak or those that can come cheap.
There is currently a dearth of players at Arsenal and the departure of Danny Welbeck has left a gap in the squad. Welbeck saw out his deal with Arsenal but Unai Emery opted against handing the England international a new deal.
While the defense of Arsenal presents the weakest link in their squad, they are looking to fortify other aspects and Claude-Maurice is seen as a replacement for Welbeck.
Claude-Maurice move to Lorient from US Torcy Val Maubuée in 2014 but he broke into the senior side of the club in 2017. The youngster featured in 35 league games for his club and scored 15 goals, and he’s earned the attraction of some top European clubs.
Lorient are said to be playing hardball over the players transfer. They have rejected two bids from Arsenal and are said to be holding out for €20m.
Should the deal be done, Claude-Maurice will be reunited with his former teammate Matteo Guendouzi who joined Arsenal from Lorient last summer.
Jeremie Aliadiere, who knows the player very well has urged Arsenal to sign the player.
He said: ‘For the money that we talk about I think he’ll make it. It’s about taking a gamble now when other teams aren’t prepared to.
‘The market has gone so crazy in the last few years. If you want a top level international it’s nothing cheaper than £40m. Per the Metro.
