Mikel Arteta Not Looking to Leave Arsenal, Claims Agent

Mikel Arteta is rumoured to be one of the players heading for an exit from Arsenal, as his contract runs down in 12 months. Arsenal’s policy of not giving players about 30 more than a one-year contract is likely to result in Arteta leaving the club. He recently voiced concerns about this policy, as he felt that experienced players have a lot more to give than Arsenal think.

Athletic Bilbao have recently entered into the frame as one of the clubs interested in Arteta. Such a move would exit the 32-year-old, as it would mean a return to Spain where he last played his football in 2005 with Real Sociedad. Athletic Bilbao recently lost the services of Ander Herrera, who joined Manchester United in a £28 million deal. Replacing him is high on the priority for the Spanish club.

Despite the contractual situation causing a lot of trouble, Arteta’s agent has clarified that his client is not looking for a move at the moment. “This is totally false. Mikel has no interest in leaving Arsenal,” said Arteta’s agent.

Arteta came to Arsenal in the summer transfer window of 2011 for £10 million. He has been a regular first-team player and has almost made 100 appearances for the gunners. Yet, intense competition in the midfield with the likes of Abou Diaby returning from injury could mean less first-team opportunities for Arteta in the upcoming season.

It would not be surprising to see him follow the likes of Bacary Sagna and let his contract expire.
