Manchester United will battle Manchester City for Barcelona ace Ivan Rakitic, it is being reported.

Manchester United are expected to have another busy transfer window at the end of the season after they disappointedly crashed out of the Champions League at the last-16 stage.

Manager Jose Mourinho has been backed heavily since taking charge of the club in 2016 and he still harbours hopes of closing the gap to rivals Manchester City.

And according to Spanish outlet Diario Gol, the Portuguese boss has made Barcelona regular Rakitic one of his top summer targets.

However, he faces one major problem in that Pep Guardiola is also interested in bringing the Croat to the Premier League.

One of the main areas Mourinho wants to invest in is the midfield.

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic have failed to make the necessary impact while Marouane Fellaini is expected to leave when his contract expires in June.

Michael Carrick has also called time on his playing career and will retire in the summer.

Hence why Diario Gol claim that the United boss has asked Barcelona chiefs to name their price for Rakitic.

The Red Devils could be in with a chance to sign Real Madrid’s Luka Modric.

But it is suggested that the 33-year-old would be too old for the team which Mourinho is trying to build at Old Trafford.
