Arsenal have held talks with Shakhtar Donetsk over the signing of Mykola Matviyenko, according to the defender’s agent. Mikel Arteta is keen to improve his defensive options before the end of the January transfer window following Calum Chambers’ season-ending injury.

Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng and RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano have both been linked with a move to the Gunners this month. But it has now been claimed that Arsenal have begun negotiations with Shakhtar over a potential deal for Matviyenko.

‘Recently, my colleagues and I have been constantly in contact with representatives of the Arsenal, and have had meetings,’ Matviyenko’s agent, Yuriy Danchenko, told Ukrainian media. ‘The Gunners’ hierarchy have already contacted [Shakhtar], and we hope that these negotiations will succeed.’

The 23-year-old came through Shakhtar’s academy and made his first-team debut for the Ukrainian club in 2015. Matviyenko, who has been capped 20 by Ukraine, has also been linked with a move to Manchester City having played against them in the Champions League earlier this season.
