It has been revealed that Manchester United turned down a secret approach by Arsenal to have Luke Shaw added in the swap deal that saw Alexis Sanchez move to Old Trafford, according to The Sun.
The Gunners eventually got Henrikh Mhkitaryan as part of the deal, but it is believed that Arsene Wenger wanted left back Luke Shaw instead.
Luke Shaw has six months left on his current contract, but United have an option to extend it for an extra year, and they are expected to take the option rather than lose him on a free at the end of the season.
The former Southampton man has struggled to establish himself in Man United since his £30 million move to the Old Trafford, with series of injuries and loss of form hampering his chances at holding down a spot in the team.
It is believed that the hierarchy at United still believe in his potentials and will not want to see him leave, however Arsenal will be back for him if United fail to tie him down, especially as he has started to impress lately.
Arsenal are not exactly short of quality at left back, and Nacho Monreal’s two assists and one goal in the 4-1 demolition of Crystal Palace while the impressive Sead Kolasinac looked on from the bench highlighted that.
But then the Spaniard is aging and getting Shaw in as a long term replacement will only do the team good, especially if he returns to the form that saw him make the PFA team of the year in 2014.
