Pep Guardiola has reiterated that Raheem Sterling will not leave the Etihad in January, amid interest from Arsenal.
Wenger has apparently identified the England international as one of Sanchez’s potential replacements and the boss has been working on how to sign him.
Last summer, Arsenal tried to take advantage of City’s interest in Sanchez by suggesting a swap deal that would have involved Sterling but City weren’t interested in such move.
Recent reports are now claiming Arsenal will try again in the winter transfer window but Guardiola has moved to quash any hope of the winger leaving the Etihad.
“Raz is staying here,” he said, reports The Sun.
“The club trust him and that is why we have invested a lot of money in him. If players want to leave they are going to leave, but he wants to stay. Players who want to leave have to ask the chairman – but there is no chance of that, he is going nowhere.”
Sterling have begun this season in fine form, scoring five goals already – almost half his last season’s tally.
Despite not being a starter, Guardiola has given him enough playing time that would keep him happy but all that could change if they end up signing Sanchez.
It means Sterling will be pushed further down the pecking order, which could just open up a move to the Emirates.
