Not every football player has the nerve to step up and take a penalty when it counts. Some players choose not to take penalties due to the amount of pressure they experience. Others thrive on it. Every Sports Pundit speaks like taking penalties is a crap shoot, a roll of the dice. But it is down to nerves, skill and the ability to score from 12-yards.
The Premier League has seen its fair share penalties taken. Quite a large number of those were scored, while many were missed. Some top Premier League players have the distinction of being great from the spot. Here are some of the Premier League’s best penalty takers.
The big man has been a solid goal scorer for Crystal Palace since joining the London team from Liverpool. Benteke has scored 11 career penalties in the Premier League. He scored just once from the spot on 2017-18 for Crystal Palace, but as long as he is with the club, he will be their go-to penalty taker.
Jermain Defoe has scored 70 percent of the penalties he has taken. The Bournemouth player didn’t take a spot kick in 2017-18, but his 14 successful spot kicks from 20 make him a perfect player to have from 12-yards.
Wayne Rooney may be about to bid the Premier League farewell at the end of 2017-18, but the former Manchester United player will leave having recorded more than a 72 percent penalty success rate in the league. Rooney has scored 23 penalty kicks during his Premier League career.
Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero is nearly automatic from the penalty spot. The Argentine has scored 22 times from the spot. During Manchester City’s Premier League winning season in 2017-18, Aguero struck four times from the penalty spot. He scored 21 goals in all for the Blues as they stormed to the title. If you can have one player taking a penalty, Aguero is a good one to choose.
Wilfried Bony doesn’t take a lot of penalty kicks. He didn’t have to while playing for Manchester City as Aguero did the honours. But when Bony steps up to the spot and takes a penalty, he usually scores. Bony has tallied five penalty kick goals from six taken in his Premier League career. His tally is good for a success rate of 83 percent from 12-yards.
Chelsea’s Eden Hazard is as automatic as Bony. The Belgian has scored 13 career Premier League penalties. He has tallied 69 goals during his Premier League career with 56 coming from open play. The 2017-18 season saw Hazard score twice from the spot for the Blues.
Harry Kane has become known as the man who saves Tottenham and England in their respective matches. The striker is a goal machine and regularly comes up with big goals to win games. Kane has scored an incredible 108 goals in 153 Premier League games. Fourteen of those goals have come from penalties. He is nearly a sure thing from 12-yards.
