Arsenal are reportedly in advanced talks to sign Brazilian defender Emerson from Atletico Minero in January, according to Fox Sports Asia.
The 19-year-old right back has been impressive this season in the Brazilian Serie A and the Gunners now see him as a possible long-term option for the right side of their defence.
The Gunners signed Stephan Lichtsteiner from Juventus in the summer to serve as back up for Hector Bellerin, but while he has been very useful so far this season, he is unlikely to stay long at the club.
He was signed on a short-term deal, and at 34 it is not expected that he would be offered an extension, hence the need for a long-term solution.
Emerson is regarded as a pacy right back which will be a great asset to the Gunners as their system involves the full backs creating width for the attack.
He has attracted the attention of a host of top European clubs, including Paris Saint Germain and Barcelona who have been tracking him for a while for a while.
Should the Gunners pull off the deal in January, it would be regarded as a major coup for them and provide not just backup, but a reasonable competition for Hector Bellerin.
His arrival will almost certainly seal Carl Jenkinson’s exit from the club. The out of favor right back was set to leave the club during the summer before suffering a serious injury. He has since returned to full fitness and made a couple of appearances this season.
