Wenger has been holding out on offering the midfielder an extension on his current deal that expires in the summer, until he can prove his fitness and form. He proved his form on loan last season at Bournemouth, but suffered a broken leg towards the end of his spell there.

However, he returned to full fitness this season, featuring in the Europa League and League Cup, performing well enough to convince Arsene Wenger.
