Arsenal and Tottenham both made bids for Rennes youngster Eduardo Camavinga in the summer transfer window, according to reports in France.
The 16-year-old midfielder signed his first professional contract with Rennes last December and went on to make seven appearances towards the back-end of the Ligue 1 campaign.
Camavinga became first player born after January 1, 2002 to start a game in Europe’s top five leagues when he made his debut against Monaco back in May and the Angolan has been breaking more records this season.
Starting away to Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month, Camavinga produced an outstanding performance and became the youngest ever player to record a Ligue 1 assist as Rennes won 2-1.
According to L’Equipe, Europe’s elite clubs have been well aware of Camavinga’s talent for some time and Rennes have fended off multiple advances for the teenager in recent weeks.
The report claims Arsenal, Spurs, Borussia Dortmund, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Bayern Munich all made offers this summer which were subsequently turned down by the French outfit.
Despite failing with their initial bid, Arsenal have maintained an interest in Camavinga and had scouts at the Parc des Princes to watch over the midfielder’s impressive display versus PSG.
On Camavinga’s performance against the French champions, Rennes boss Julien Stephan said: ‘He played a very interesting match, indeed, like the whole team. ‘We are talking to him.
He is someone who is also very intellectually gifted, who knows how to question himself, who knows how to ask the right questions.
‘Many of the professional have taken him under their wing, because he is very respectful in the dressing room and very attentive to their advice. He blossomed with us this summer.’
After Rennes’ victory, the youngster tweeted: ‘Nice win against PSG, happy to have been given man of the match. ‘Thank you for your messages.’
