Serbian international midfielder Nemanja Matic is eager to re-sign for former club Chelsea in this coming January transfer window.

The 25-year-old joined Chelsea in 2009 from Slovakian side MFK Kosice on a four-year deal for a mere £1.5 million, and during two years at Stamford Bridge only ever made two appearances for the club with one of them being sent on as a substitute in the 69th minute.

After never getting a regular place at Chelsea, Matic was sent on loan to Holland where he played for Vitesse before being dispatched to the Portuguese capital to play for Benfica as part of a deal that saw Brazilian international David Luiz move to London.

Since Matic joined Benfica in January of 2011 his career has really taken off at the stadium of light with the midfielder netting the ball four times in 45 appearances.

The value Benfica have put on him has also skyrocketed with the Portuguese side attaching a 45 million euro buyout clause on his contract that runs until 2018.

When talking about the possibility of moving back to his former club Matic said:

“I would probably like to stay another year with Benfica, but if somebody like [Jose] Mourinho wanted to bring me back to London, it would be difficult to turn down,” said Matic.

“It would be a great chance to prove that I can play in the Premier League.”

However, reports in Portugal suggest that Liverpool have now entered the race for the 25-year-old.

Jose Mourinho is apparently not the only one interested in signing Matic after the Benfica star won the Portuguese Primeira Liga player of the year award after winning player of the month three times last season.

According to reports in Portugal’s daily sports newspaper O Jogo Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has labelled Matic as a critical January target for the Reds as Liverpool look to strengthen their midfield options.
