Juventus have rejected Arsenal’s loan offer for their Italy international Daniele Rugani. Arsenal obliterated their transfer record on Thursday to sign Nicolas Pepe from Lille for £72million, adding to their recent captures of Dani Ceballos and William Saliba.

Despite the flurry of activity, Unai Emery is still keen to strengthen a defence which shipped 51 goals in the Premier League last season and capitulated in the Europa League final against Chelsea.

Captain Lauren Koscielny effectively remains on strike in an attempt to engineer a move back to France, while Saliba will return to Saint-Etienne on a year-long loan to continue his development in Ligue 1.

Rob Holding is closing in on a first team return after 10 months out with a serious knee injury, but the sight of Shkodran Mustafi gifting Moussa Dembele the winning goal in last Sunday’s Emirates Cup highlighted Arsenal’s urgent need for defensive reinforcements.

According to Goal, the north London club tabled an offer of a two-year loan for Rugani with the option to buy but it was turned down by the Italian champions.

Rugani made just 20 appearances in all competitions last season but is keen to win over Max Allegri’s successor Maurizio Sarri.

That task has been rendered more difficult by the arrival of Matthijs de Ligt from Ajax, but Juventus are reluctant to lose the 25-year-old given fitness concerns over their veteran centre-half Giorgio Chiellini.
