Arsenal great Paul Merson believes Arsenal should be lining up current Chelsea boss Antonio Conte as a replacement for Arsene Wenger, according to the Metro.
Arsene Wenger has just over a year left on his current two-year deal which he signed at the end of last season and is not expected to extend his contract.
Antonio Conte’s position as manager at Chelsea has been under threat, with recent run of poor results threatening to see him get sacked, and a number of replacements already being lined up for his job.
However, former Arsenal player Paul Merson believes Conte is the perfect replacement for Arsene Wenger, as he believes the Italian will sort out the Gunners well documented defensive woes.
“The day he [Conte] leaves Chelsea, if I was Arsenal, I’d be straight on the phone,’ Merson told Sky Sports.
‘Arsenal need someone like him.
‘He upsets people but he wants you to play a certain way and he will make you rock solid at the back.
‘As soon as Arsenal get rock solid at the back they will be a force.”
‘He’s a top manager.
‘I think Arsenal would say “we will have you next season”. I think they would be mad if they didn’t.
‘Sooner or later it’s got to change, Arsene can’t [stay forever].
‘These managers don’t come along too often in football. I think he ticks all the boxed I really do.
‘Arsenal can’t keep on missing all these managers.”
Conte is expected to leave the Blues at the end of the season if he doesn’t get sacked earlier and has been linked with moves to PSG among others.
