Manchester has made inquiries about a number of strikers including Alexis Sanchez, Jamie Vardy and Javier Hernandez as they look to find a backup for Romelu Lukaku, according to the Telegraph.
The biggest of those names is Alexis Sanchez who has six months left on his current deal and whose transfer is currently turning into a saga, with Man City currently the favourites to sign him after coming close with a bid in the summer, and United reportedly making a £25 million bid for him recently.
United, whose squad has been boosted by players return from injury during their warm weather training in Dubai recently, have back up striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic out injured again after recently recovering from a cruciate ligament injury. This has left Lukaku without a backup and they believe this is the reason for Lukaku’s dip in form.
Mourinho prefers to use Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial from the flanks, and as such has left him short of options in the central role.
Alexis Sanchez is currently valued at £35 million by Arsenal, with City reportedly not willing to bid above £25 million, United will have to cough up at least £25 million and surpass City’s wage offer of £250,000 per week to land the Chilean.
Even then, Arsenal prefer to get his replacement lined up before they sell him this January, and another United target Malcom is touted as a potential replacement for Sanchez.
Vardy represents the most expensive and most difficult option of the three, as he is valued at around £35 million and would not be allowed leave unless Vichai the head of the Srivaddhanaprabha family that owns Leicester City gives his approval.
Hernandez represent the easiest option as he is unwanted by current West Ham manager David Moyes who was also not impressed with him in 2013 when he played under the Scottish manager at United, as a result West Ham are prepared to listen to offers for the player.
