Bredan Rodgers has revealed that Chelsea could have signed two or Brazil’s superstars Neymar and Phillipe Coutinho when they were much younger.
Rodgers was a manager at Chelsea academy before he went into top level coaching and was a key part of Chelsea’s recruitment process when he was at the club.
Neymar joined PSG for €222m in the summer while Coutinho was the subject of £118m bid from Barcelona in the same summer.
Speaking in an interview with a Scotland newspaper, as quoted by the Express, Rodgers said both players could have ended up at Chelsea.
“When we were at Chelsea we were aware of Neymar and Coutinho.
“Lee (Congerton, former chief scout at Chelsea) came back from a trip and mentioned them.
“Neymar was in first teams young, he wanted to stay in Brazil before moving.
“I love his hunger. He’s a worker.
“He’s come out of the shadows a bit, and obviously felt like he wanted to be the main man at PSG. Neymar is a massive talent.”
Chelsea fans can remember that the club actually pursued Neymar while he was at Santos. In 2011, we were close to signing him for around £18m but the forward decided to stay in Brazil to continue his development.
However, Coutinho wasn’t really on Chelsea’s radar. Obviously the club didn’t believe he will turn out to be as good as he is now.
