Arsenal legend Paul Merson reckons Arsenal should have made a move for Danny Drinkwater.

Drinkwater joined Chelsea from Leicester City on transfer deadline but Merson believes it is the Gunners who should have made a move to sign the midfielder.

Following Arsenal’s display against Liverpool last week, Merson believes there are no enough fighters in the Gunners squad and a player like Drinkwater, who apparently plays with his heart every time he is on the pitch would have gone a long way to improve Arsenal’s midfield.

Drinkwater’s move to Chelsea dragged on for long and wasn’t completed until the final hours of the transfer window and the ex Gunner believe it would have been the perfect opportunity to sign him under the Blue’s noses.

“I was at the 8-2 game against Manchester United in 2011. But Sunday was worse than that. This was Wenger’s best team, and they gave up on him.

“The players look like they couldn’t have cared less. You get the sack when your players don’t look fussed. But not at Arsenal. It’s all too nice.

“Arsenal should have bid for Danny Drinkwater rather than let him go to Chelsea. At least he will fight for you. This lot just give up.

“In my day, the dressing room after a performance like that would have been a war zone. You would have had to call the police because there would have been fights everywhere.”

Arsenal have enough numbers in midfield already and that must have prevented Wenger from signing another midfielder.

I agree the players didn’t show guts in the game against Liverpool but Drinkwater wouldn’t have been the solution in anyway.

Wenger can always instill the fighting spirits in his players and I think we should be more concerned about the quality of our game on the night.

What can we do to improve the current players we have? That should be the question and not going about signing an average player for the sake of it.
