Gunners star Lucas Torreira ‘tried to take responsibility’ and was the ‘only person on the pitch’ doing so, reckons Matthew Upson
Arsenal should start Lucas Torreira who ‘tried to take responsibility’ against Watford, according to Matthew Upson.
The Gunners were unable to see off the Hornets on Sunday after slipping to a 2-2 draw.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored two quick-fire goals in the first half before Tom Cleverly and Roberto Pereyra levelled the game.
This result sees the Gunners drop to seventh in the Premier League.
Fans have fumed at the manager for his tactical decisions at Vicarage Road.
And Upson, who spent six seasons in north London, has suggested one player who came off the bench that should be a bigger part of Emery’s plans.
Speaking on Stadium Astro, the 40-year-old said: “I like Torreira because he came on the pitch with some character.”
The midfielder came off the bench after 67 minutes, with only one start so far this season.
But Upson was impressed with the 23-year-old’s attitude on the pitch.
“He’s a young player,” the former defender added.
“But he went up to David Luiz and said ‘get up the pitch’.
“They’re the subtle things that are important.
“It shows he’s trying to take responsibility and run the game.
“You don’t have to rant and rave at people to do that but be confident in yourself.”
Co-pundit Dave Kitson agreed with the former defender, pointing out the Uruguayan’s key difference to his team-mates.
“After the first goal, I saw the reaction of the Arsenal players,” he said.
“[Mesut] Ozil was there with his hands on his hips.
“It had the feeling of ‘here we go again’, it really did.
“The body language suggested Watford would get another one because Arsenal didn’t look interested.
“The only person who did was Torreira, who was shouting at a everyone.”
It comes as Emery has been told what type of player he should have signed instead of Luiz .
