Arsenal are believed to have offered London rivals West Ham United the chance to sign versatile forward Theo Walcott in the just concluded summer window.
The player’s career at the Emirates can be said to have stalled in recent seasons with his importance to the team on a downward turn, with the Hammers in the summer market for both a winger and a striker, reports have now revealed that the Wenger did try to offload Walcott by offering the player to the Hammers during the window.
According to The Times via via This is football West Ham were offered Walcott but rejected him because they “felt his wages were too high”.
It is said that the 47-times England international’s contract, which runs until the summer of 2019, is worth around a £100,000-a-week.
The newspaper then went on to reveal that Arsene Wenger’s reason for trying to sell the 28-year-old was due to the increasing bit-part role he now plays.
Despite the departure of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in the summer window, Walcott who has been at Arsenal for over a decade is still no closer to guaranteeing a first team spot at the Emirates.
The speedster though put in a good performance last week by netting a brace in the 4-2 victory over BATE Borisov in the Europa League.
He was however back on the substitutes bench for the victory over Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend, he was then largely underwhelming when he replaced Alexander Lacazette with 20mins left to play.
It is also understood that the Gunners star who is not in Gareth Southgate’s latest Three Lions squad is keen to play on a regular basis ahead of next summer’s World Cup.
He already faces a battle against time to win back a place in the England manager’s plans which indicates the possibility of a winter move.
Walcott who predominantly plays on the right for the Gunners is also adept at playing through the middle.
Though he may have failed to develop into a top class forward, Walcott has been a dependable servant for the over the years.
The player has so far scored 107 goals and also supplied a further 74 assists in 390 Arsenal appearances.
