Arsenal’s on-loan midfielder Matteo Guendouzi impressed for France Under-21s in their victory over Switzerland on Monday evening.

France had already secured qualification for next summer’s European Under-21 Championship ahead of their match against Switzerland.

But Sylvain Ripoll’s side secured top spot in Group B on goal difference with a 3-1 victory.

Two goals from Celtic striker Odsonne Edouard put France on their way before Colin Dagba completed the win with his strike in injury time.

But it was Guendouzi’s excellent work in the build up to that goal which helped complete France’s win.

A mix-up between two Swiss players on the halfway line was forced through Guendouzi’s relentless pressing and Arsenal’s on-loan midfielder sprinted over 40 yards with the ball before squaring the ball for Dagba to finish.

‘For me, it was the mentality that made the difference,’ Guendouzi, who is spending the season on loan at Hertha Berlin, said after the game.

‘We were keen to take our revenge on the first leg. We have shown that we are really equipped to do something good at the Euros. ‘We were keen to show that we progressed during these qualifications, that we have a good squad.

‘We have the opportunities to kill the match and score a third. But we know that anything can happen in football and we could not let go to get that top spot of the group.

‘The objective will be quite simply to win the Euros. I am convinced that there is something very beautiful to be sought with this group.

‘For most players, we have been playing together for several years and we know each other perfectly. I think it happened tonight.’
