Arsenal are set to open contract talks with Jack Wilshere, Wenger has revealed.

The future of the English international who is into the last year of his contract at the Emirates has been uncertain since his return from his Bournemouth loan spell last season.

The midfielder who was linked with a host of clubs during last summer’s transfer window eventually remained in North London.

However, heading into January where he would be able to sign a pre-contract with foreign clubs, Wenger has now revealed that talks regarding extending Wilshere’s stay at the Emirates beyond the current campaign have been scheduled to take place next month.

Speaking ahead of the Gunners stalemate with Red Star Belgrade, the gaffer disclosed that the fit again midfielder could very well extend his Arsenal contract before the turn of the year.

“I wanted to give him six months not to think about it and then see where we go,” said the Arsenal boss reports Football London

“I said many times that will be decided in December.”

Addressing the player’s future, while Wenger stated he would not be changing clubs, he however disclosed there would be a slight positional change for the midfielder on the pitch.

“I think he can play in the midfield in a 4-2-3-1, or in a 4-3-3, but the system we play I see him as more advanced,” said the Frenchman.

“It’s always hard to make these kind of decisions, in my head he’s more a little bit higher up. A player who can effect the game in the final third, more than a box to box player

“I see him more as someone who has a quick response, quick reactions and a quality pass in the final third.”

Wenger added: “Jack has a quality that is very difficult to get. He can dribble and he can as well give the final ball. You do not get that a lot.

“For me he is an a position between wide and completely central because he can turn the game forward, chip a little ball, go past people in a short space.

“So that’s why the system suits him well.”

Wilshere played in an advanced role for the entirety of the draw in the Europa League, a result that saw the Gunners through to the round of 32 in the tournament.
