As the winter transfer window draws closer, the Thomas Lemar stories are already upon us yet again as Arsene Wenger has once again reaffirmed his interest in signing Lemar, but also suggesting it is highly unlikely that the Gunners would be making a January offer for the vastly talented French international.

The highly rated winger was a key target for Wenger last summer with the French gaffer making three bids for the youngster in the last window.

On deadline day, various sources had revealed that the Gunners tabled an offer of around £92million, which was swiftly accepted by Monaco, as Wenger tried to bring him to the Emirates as a replacement for the outgoing Alexis Sanchez who had had his head turned by the possibility of reuniting with former boss Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

All was not to be in the end as a deal for Lemar could not be completed in what was too little time left of the window, which in turn led to Wenger blocking Sanchez’s move to the Etihad despite a fee of around £60million already agreed between Arsenal and Manchester City.

When asked if he was considering another attempt to sign Lemar, Wenger who usually gives very little away regarding transfers expectedly remained coy about his plans for the winter window. The gaffer told reporters:

“No, at the moment I have a big squad and the problem for me is to keep everyone together until the end of the season. reports Goal

“In January, I don’t know yet.”

Just like last summer, it would make sense to believe that Sanchez’s departure would play a major role as to when Lemar likely arrives at the Emirates.

Should the Chilean remain with the Gunners till the end of the current campaign, the chances of Lemar arriving mid-season are very slim as it is understood that Wenger views the 21-year-old as an ideal replacement for Alexis.
