Arsene Wenger insists he wants Jack Wilshere to stay as talks over a new contract stall.

Wilshere has entered the final months of his current deal and could be available for transfer at the end of the season.

The 26-year-old has made clear he wants to stay at his boyhood club but is understood to be frustrated with Arsenal’s highly incentivised but lesser wages offer.

Wilshere is understood to want to stay at the Emirates but with negotiations at an impasse, it remains a possibility the midfielder could leave.

But Wenger insists he wants Wilshere to stay and claimed he’s doing everything to sure the England ace remains at the club.

Wenger told beIN SPORTS: “I can only reassure him that I want him to stay and we make him a proposal and after that we also have to accept that Jack is at an age where he will have offers from somewhere else.

“Personally, I have put my weight in for him to stay, I want him to stay and I think he’s an Arsenal man.

“Gattuso said the other day that he has the technique of a Spanish player and the character of an English player and I think it’s well-judged. So that’s why you want him to stay at the club.”

Asked if he was doing everything he can to keep Wilshere, Wenger replied: “Yes. Jack has gone through situations where he was injured long-term.

“You hope that in the next three, four years, he will be injury free and that we see the real Jack Wilshere.

“Jack Wilshere in full power and fitness is a regular player in the English national team.”
