It was the name on the Arsenal teamsheet that produced the most reaction, and most of it wasn’t positive.

Shkodran Mustafi came in from the cold to make his first Gunners appearance of the season in Thursday’s Europa League group stage clash at Eintracht Frankfurt, having been frozen out by Unai Emery for the campaign thus far.

It had appeared as though the German international and 2014 World Cup winner was going to leave the Emirates Stadium in the summer, with several clubs linked with a move for a player who looked to have somewhat lost his way in English football.

The signing of David Luiz further pushed the former Valencia man down the pecking order, and with Sokratis Papastathopoulos, Rob Holding and Calum Chambers also on the books in North London, the path was clear for him to go.

But he didn’t.

Mustafi ended up staying, and with Sokratis left at home for this trip to Germany, Chambers moved to right-back and Holding still not considered fit enough to feature, it was the German who came into the side to partner Luiz at the back.

As you can imagine, that selection prompted no end of comment from Arsenal fans online before the game, but in the event Mustafi turned in a decent performance as the Gunners held off the repeated attacks of the home side.

And that left those same fans impressed, even if the level of the opposition was questioned.
